Research in Our Lab
Our work spans a variety of research areas relating to different domains of linguistic inquiry including phonetics, phonology, first and second language acquisition, and literacy development. Student researchers in our lab are encouraged to explore research areas that interest them including working with the phenomenon of phonetic imitation, second language learning, heritage languages speakers, regional variation, and speech perception.
Professional Development
In the Experimental Linguistics Research Hub, wee prioritize helping students develop a range of skills that are valued in academics and in a variety of workplaces. For example, students in our lab develop analytical skills in designing experiments, data management, critical thinking, data analysis including graphical and statistical analysis, oral presentation skills, writing skills, science communication, and collaborative work. We also provide opportunities for students to develop skills in preparing grant or scholarship applications, writing CVs, networking and community building, and publishing.

A large sound-attenuated booth for recording speech
Professional-grade audio recording equipment for both in-lab and field-based data collection
High-fidelity speakers and microphones for presenting audio stimuli
Dedicated computer stations for running perception and production experiments
A hybrid meeting space that supports in-person and remote collaboration
Flexible student workspaces just outside the lab for writing, analysis, and team-based work
